«Antike in Basel» is celebrating its 10th anniversary
From June 15 to 21, internationally renowned specialists at the ancient art fair «Antike in Basel» showcase fine works of art from the Great Civilizations of the Mediterranean – beyond that also prehistoric artifacts, Tribal Art and artworks from Oceania and Asia.
The broad spectrum of exhibits offers a fascinating glimpse into art historical developments that span from prehistory to the modern era. Ethnographic art from Africa and Oceania has significantly contributed to the character of Classic Modernism. And the timeless pure shapes of prehistoric artifacts seem to be present in the reduced aesthetic in many examples of today’s design.
The juxtaposition of works from various periods and cultures creates an imaginary bridge for the understanding of modern art – and simultaneously points out its roots. Therefore, this “crossover” is also of great interest to collectors of contemporary art.
As the cultural capital of Switzerland, Basel has a long tradition of collecting not only antiquities but also modern art. «Antike in Basel» was created to continue the legacy of the «Basel Ancient Art Fair» (BAAF), the world’s leading fair in this field that had been held in Riehen/Basel from 2004 to 2015. For the 10th edition the participants of «Antike in Basel» have decided to abandon the traditional November date and to present the event during Art Basel.
