This group of Roman glass comes from the collection assembled by Guy Monod (1906–1962), a French diplomat whose career successively took him to Berlin, Algiers, Alexandria, Warsaw, Agadir, and Istanbul. A graduate of Sciences Po, he joined the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1934 before serving in the administration of Free France in Algiers during the Second World War.
Appointed French Consul General in Alexandria from 1950 to 1955, at a time when the city was a major center of intellectual, archaeological, and commercial activity, he developed a particular interest in ancient civilizations. Throughout his various postings, he assembled an important collection of antiquities, of which these glass vessels are a remarkable example.
The collection has remained within the same family since its inception and was subsequently expanded and continued by his son, Hugues Monod, a professor of medicine, who preserved its spirit and contributed to its growth. Today, it represents a collection patiently built over two generations of knowledgeable enthusiasts, united by a shared passion for archaeology and the arts of the ancient world.
